The Power of Unity Woven in Patterns

On May 20 and 21, 2026, the Chernivtsi Institute of Trade and Economics of SUTE (ChITE SUTE) came alive with festive events celebrating World Embroidery Day, marking the 20th anniversary of this beloved Ukrainian holiday. On May 21, the institute community enthusiastically joined the all-Ukrainian flash mob, "The Embroidered Road to Victory," held in the heart of Chernivtsi at the Central Square. Embracing the holiday's core tradition, participants proudly wore their vyshyvankas—traditional embroidered shirts. More than just clothing, the embroidery serves as a vibrant genetic code and a deep-rooted foundation that nourishes Ukrainian identity, serving as a powerful reminder of heritage and ancestral lineages.

In 2026, Vyshyvanka Day carried an even deeper, poignant significance as ChITE SUTE joined the newly launched "Embroidered Ribbon of Memory" campaign. In a touching tribute, students and faculty honored fallen heroes—including the institute's own graduates, students, and staff. They tied ribbons embroidered in national colors near the portraits of the deceased, offering a solemn token of remembrance for those whose ultimate sacrifice secures the nation's freedom and allows others to work and study today.

Adding to the cultural festivities, the institute's library hosted an ethnographic performance titled "The Ukrainian Towel: Symbol, Amulet, and Tradition". The opening ceremony drew a distinguished gathering, including Director Anatolii Vdovichen, Deputy Directors Vasyl Kyfyak and Iryna Losheniuk, Head of the Academic Department Iryna Mustetsa, alongside representatives of the student council, faculty, and staff. Far from being a mere decorative household item, the traditional Ukrainian embroidered towel (rushnyk) stands as an iconic national symbol. Woven from linen or hemp threads and adorned with intricate patterns, it holds a deep, sacred meaning that embodies purity, kindness, hospitality, life's journey, and the unbreakable bond between generations.

A captivating centerpiece of the performance was a recreated fragment of a traditional Ukrainian village hut, beautifully adorned with cherished, heirloom ceremonial towels brought in by students and staff. Historically, no sacred ritual or major life milestone in Ukrainian culture ever took place without the presence of an embroidered towel. By keeping these folk traditions alive and celebrating embroidery as a cornerstone of the national spirit, the ChITE SUTE community proudly honors its ancestors, preserves its unique identity, and strengthens its faith in a bright, peaceful future.
